Nice uptime

In my office at work I have a linux box. It helped me learn about linux and runs a little Apache web server for me.

It is stable and it shows:

When I put the box together I slapped in a video card but didn’t put in that little screw that keeps the card in place.

Fast forward two years….

I unhook the video cable to attach the monitor to another computer I’m playing with. After I’m done I try to reattach the cable to the video board on the linux box. To my dismay, the card come loose and slides out of it’s slot. No video for me.

I can push the card back in, but no video. The box is still running as you can see from the image above, but no video.

Anyone know how to reinitialize the video card without rebooting the box? I’m running Mandrake 7.2.

Pushing through

For some reason, I’ve been unable to push myself to post here since I got sick. Dunno why, perhaps it’s the enormity of the story of getting sick. In any case, I’m typing now, so my blockage will be over after this.

What happened:

Several weeks ago I got sick. I had a fever and felt crappy. I went to the doctor and he sent me home telling me I was tired with not prescriptions. Three days later I was worse and went back to the doctor. He was not in and they sent me to the Urgent Care next door.

Once I arrived at Urgent Care, the fun began. Immediately they told me I was quite sick. Soon I had an IV and they were sucking blood out for test. After six liters of fluid pumped into me, I still didn’t have to pee. They blood tests & xrays showed I had pnemonia.

The two doctors there told me I had to go the hospital. I tried to defer, but they got serious and told me I was very sick.

I rode an ambulance to the hospital where there wheeled me to ICU. Intensive care is a hardcore place I learned. They do not fuck around there. If you are there, you are SICK.

It dawned on me at this point, that maybe some worry should enter my mind. After the team of doctors interrogated me, the double IVs of multiple antibiotics, the catheter, and endless prodding and poking, I realized I wouldn’t be home for a bit.

Pnemonia, blood infection, and severe dehydration was the call.

After 5 days, they sent me home. I was physically weak, tired, had a chest pain, and had lost 20 pounds.

I spent a week and a half at home recovering. Even after that, I still wasn’t myself. These days I feel pretty good.

I visited the doctor to confirm things were OK. At the end of the visit, he mentioned that if I had been old or had other medicla problems I would have most likely died. Kinda scary to think that I came close to death. He said if I had come to the doctor on Saturday instead of Friday, he doesn’t know what would have happened.

My advice is request the anti-biotics when sick.

That’s it. The story of me being sick. More mindless banter and stories to come.

Home

I’m back home from my brief trip to the hospital.

I’m quite tired now, but when I’m better I’ll explain why you never want to be in the Intensive Care Unit.

Excuse me, but I need to go rest now…

Fever

I’ve had this fever for 7 days now. I can’t take much more of it…

My body aches and and I am constantly sweating. Another trip to the doctor today…

Today I had planned on going to E3. No dice. I’d probably pass out on the floor.

My hope rests on recovering today and seeing part of the show tommorrow.

Just a simple screen capture…

All I wanted was a simple screen capture of a scene of a DVD I have. I thought that every DVD player in a PC would have a screen capture built in. Not so young grasshopper.

I tried WinDVD & PowerDVD with no luck. I spent 3 hours Sunday night trying to get a capture. I searched and read tons on the net with no success. I had someone at work try with a new Apple Gwhatever Mac with the new spanking DVD drives. No luck.

Aaron at the office did get a screen capture with the WinDVD version supplied with the new Dell computers. I tried upgrading at home to it, no dice. “This computer is not a verfied Dell computer” appeared on my screen as the setup ran. Fuck you Dell.

So I delved deeper into the haxx0r depths and found DVD Genie. This sweet piece of software ‘fixes’ various DVD player software and enables more functionality. In my case, it turned the screen capture feature on in my version of WinDVD.

Go my minions. Download and be amazed.

BTW, here’s the screen capture I wanted. Kewl logo huh?
