LA Radio takes another hit

This morning I was driving to work and flipping through my presets. When I got to button two, Arrow 93.1, I heard talking. Huh? 93.1 is the rock station that plays music 24/7 and doesn’t go for the talk stuff. While not a big classic rock fan, I do like having a station where music plays songs I know.
Sure enough, 93.1 has a new wacky morning funnyman, Johnny B. Fromt he looks of it, we are going to be stuck with this comedy jokester for a while. God damn, what is it with the morning show trend. I count my blessings that Indie 103.1 has still resisted the trend to host their music in the morning.
I’ve resisted the idea of satellite radio for a while, but it almost looks inevitable when you find it hard to find music on FM radio. Adding yet another monthly charge to the budget is unappealing, but if the trend toward talk continues, it may be my only asylum.
For those of you that simply must know, my radio presets are:
1) 89.3 – KPCC
2) 93.1 – Arrow
3) 97.1 – KLSX
4) 103.1 – Indie 103.1
5) 106.7 – KROQ

  1. I have XM radio, and I really enjoy it. I bought the boom box also and use that in the office, so I can listen all day, and feel I am getting my 10 dollars a month value….

  2. I have almost the same presets as you, but in different order. 1. KROQ, 2. KLSX, 3. Star 98.7 (but I don’t listen to it anymore, except for Richard Blade’s show, because of that bitch Jamie White, so I should change it to 95.5), 4. KCRW 89.9 (but I may change that due to the whole Ruth Seymour drama), 5. Arrow 93.1, 6. Indie 103.1. I’m thinking of switching to satellite, though, but most of the time these selections bode well for my commuting enjoyment.

  3. I have XM Radio too…I pay for it a year at a time, so I get a bit of a discount and I don’t have to think about it every month.
They’ve evolved the programming…many more “commercial free” channels. I find it indespensible for long trips. Just set the channel and never change it over the course of a 600 mile road trip. I love the stand-up comedy channel. Non stop standup…good stuff.

  4. I agree completly Bill, I bought it for my road trip to move back to Alabama from Colorado, and the Stand up channel got me through most of that 22 hour long trip, while laughing my ass off. It was great

  5. I LOVE XM !!
I bought the Alpine XM Stereo for the car a few weeks ago, and cant live without it. So much so, I then bought a XM PCR for the home as well (yes I pay for two subscriptions, both on the 2 year plan…..)
My wife likes to listen to Rock and country throughout the day at home, and I enjoy flipping between Rock and Country in the car to/from work. (and sometimes flipping to LA Traffic and CNN/Fox stuff when the commute takes to long and i tire of music)
Michael, time to buy XM !

  6. I was wondering if anyone could email me Jonathon Brandmeier radio show on 93.1 Arrow mornings?
I would pay for the service, like $10/wk, but I’m sure that thousands of others would pay as well. For only 1,000 subscribers, it starts looking like $10,000/wk, or $520,000/yr.

  7. Johnny Brandmeier is one of the most exciting radio hosts to hit the airwaves. We miss him in Chicago, I’d buy into XM if I knew I could hear him again. And I’d pay top dollar.

  8. Bye Bye Arrow radio….kissed off listeners got a bunch of scriffy scrabble crap instead of “music”…so rock on FM is narrowed to only KROQ and KLOS.

  9. wtf happen to arrow!! I turn my radio on today and hit the arrow button and a tone loc song is playing!!!

  10. Jonathon Brandmeier it seems was the beginning of the end for Arrow. I’ll miss Dr. Joe Benson!

  11. I can’t believe that you would just take arrow off the air without telling any of the listeners what has happened! Goes to show you how much radio stations really care about thier listeners!! I will miss Johnny B and Uncle Joe =(

  12. Went into the garage Tuesday about 4:30 and turned on the radio. Some kind of whacked out odds & ends was on the air. Pretty soon I got the idea it was dealing with ‘Jack’ for some reason. Never did hear Uncle Joe, but some Jack 93.1 stuff a little after 5. No notice, no nothing. Wonder what happened to the DJ’s or if they were just told to pack their crap and get out?

  13. This is horrifying. Arrow was my #1 preset, followed by KLOS. I rarely listened to KLOS because they play some real crap sometimes. Stuff that’s not even classic rock, y’know. Then I hear this broad say “LA’s *only* classic rock station” so I’m like “WTF?” and sure enough I flip over to 93.1 and there’s some damn No Doubt song on.
    Noooice warning fellas. Real good.

  14. Just have to say I got in the car yesterday, turned to Arrow and thought I had died and gone to hell. Since the station is still owned by infinity broadcasting, perhaps some complaint calls there would be appropriate.

  15. absolute crap. I’ve grown up on arrow and this really sucks. Now there is no rock in the morning because of those dorks Mark & Brian on KLOS. What am I going to listen to when Howard goes to commercials???

  16. WTF happen to the staions format?? i tune in friday morning and no johnny b!!!! just some other crap. why wasn’t there any notice given to all the great listeners? after a day of giving away U2 tickets a great station came to an end. after not being able to find something decent i turn the radio off. my morning commute will never be the same. i will miss u johnny b and uncle joe and the rest of the staff from arrowfm
classic rock. what a way to go KCBS!!!!

  17. come on folks, get real. Johnny B. in the morning was the worst the station could have done. If the folks in Chicago miss him, you canno whave him back, since I am sure he contributed to the downfall of the station. Everyone I talked to and who was listening to Arrow in the morning because of the great music, left the station after this guy came on. He ruined the music-morning for Arrow listeners. He wasn’t even funny!

  18. My daughter and I won arrowfast tickets last summer, we had the best of times. We decided it was so good that we started putting away money for this summer’s arrowfest. I urge all Arrow fans to write in, because we all are now in limbo as to what happened to our FAVORITE Rock Station. We Miss Johnny B and all the D.J.’s.
Summer will not be the same without ARROWFEST.
As far as for the new station, it’s jacked-up allright. Were Classick Rock Fans. We’re not listening.

  19. I’m sooo upset by them changing this station! I loved Johnny B in the morning. I found him very funny. I also loved to get up on Sat. morning and crank Arrow on the radio while cleaning. Guess it’s time to dig out the CD’s or buy and mp3 player. I’m totally bummed!

  20. Wow, I found Jack last Thursday afternoon and was really shocked. After all, it was St. Patrick’s Day, not April Fool’s Day! I had been listening to Arrow from the start, when Garry Moore was the only DJ with a last name on the station (I believe he is now on KLOS).
Back then, about 12 years ago, it was like a breath of fresh air – finally a station I could listen to all day. Unfortunately, over the years, that air got stale. It seems the playlist was so very limited.
But I loved listening to Uncle Joe in the mornings. Remember a year or 2 ago, when they replaced his morning show with an obnoxious shock dj – it only took hundreds of disgruntled fans to get him back in the am.
This last time, Johnny B bumped Joe – but I was getting used to Johnny. At least he still played some music. And I had Joe in the afternoon.
Until I found this site, I actually thought this new station was unique – now I see it is springing up all over the place and Southern California wasn’t even the first! Wow, what happened to our creativity?
Ah, all things come to an end. Heck, I still pine for KMET – can’t bear listening to the Wave that knocked it off. Anyone remember the Edge? With Nicole Sandler – that station was taken over by Spanish radio.
Well, we still have KLOS for now.

  21. Well, so far the mix of music on 93.1 is a mess. Some of it is good, but full of chestnuts; the rest is . . . well.
The one good thing is that I’ll never have to listen to that moron Jonathan Brandmeier again. 4 songs an hour, and the rest of it his shtick? If Arrow’s ratings plummeted in the last six months, this was why.
However, satellite radio is looking better and better now.
