BF:V

I’ve been playing Battlefield Vietnam, the successor to Battlefield: 1942 for a little over a week now. I really enjoyed BF:1942, and have been looking forward to this game for quite a while.
A few screen shots:

SA-7 about to take out a helicopter.

The troops are choppered into a combat location.

Some people have difficulty mastering helicopter piloting.

In the game you can do everything flying jets, to planting land mines, to sniping, to driving a tank, to simply carrying an M-16. Overall it’s a great games with fairly good balance.
I’ve got a couple of gripes with the overpowered M60 machine gun and the underpowered anti-aircraft capabilities of infantry, but they’ll be fixed in upcoming patches.
I also have Unreal Tournament 2004, but I really haven’t played it much yet. All in good time.
The girls saw me practicing with a joystick, learning how to fly in the game and wanted to try. Who am I to deny my daughters wholesome gaming fun? Soon they were driving all the vehicles in the game and even flying the aircraft. The call it The Crashing Game since all they like to do is crash things.

I’m so proud they are turning out to be fine young gamers.
Lastly, since SXSW my arm has been hurting from too much computer usage. Since I spend all day at one and most of the evening at one, it gets little time to heal up. As a result, my forearm is a throbbing and even a handful of Advil wasn’t killing the pain.

So I broke down and got a brace. I can kinda type, but slowly. Moving a mouse it difficult. Looks like I just have to lay off the keyboard for a while. Maybe I’ll even *gasp* watch some TV.

  1. I find normal keyboards impossibly hard to type with for any extended period of time, so I use Microsoft Natural keyboards at work and home. My hands hurt too when I use a normal keyboard.

  2. I’ll have to agree with Anita. One of the ways I used to make my wrists feel better was to buy and use a small 5 inch wacom tablet. Another strategy I employed was to remap some keys in Emacs that were particularlly troublesome.
I suppose the former strategy can be used by most people. The latter… not so much 🙂

  3. I’ve pretty much got the same problem due to a poor “mousing posture” at work. The inside of my right forearm (back by the elbow) is extremely painful (even to the touch)and the pain radiates up to the top of my right shoulder. I’ve had to take nights off from gaming (shudder) because of it.

  4. Both BillB and myself play BF:V with a gaming group called the August Knights (www.augustknights.com). We are mostly comprised of middle-aged married guys who got sick of playing with 13 year-old morons on pub servers. We have our own BF:V server up and have admin capabilities for kicking and banning people. We also have a Ventrillo server up for voice comms.
If you are interested, stop by and drop us a post in the forum section. We are always looking for mature, like-minded players to fill our ranks.
And I agree, BF:V is a real hoot. Some minor play and balance issues that should be worked out in the next patch.

  5. Just got off BFV on your server and am chuffed to find such a nice bunch of gamers . No abuse or comments about me being an amatuer although it can be frustrating amongst experts. I will be looking for you in future and hopefully giving you all a better game . thanks muchly
