I messed with the hard drive for a few more hours. It’s gone sour. No matter how I try to format it, it fails. The software says it’s gone bad.
I go to Western Digital’s site to check the warranty. The warranty ran out on May 24th. Yesterday….
Damn.

Just as you had your “Doh!” moment when you saw the warranty date, someone somewhere was probably laughing.
I hate to say it, but hard drive hardware errors happen on both Mac and PC platforms.
One of my shiny new hard-drives bit the dust recently, and I didn’t want to send it in because somewhere on there was all my personal financial information.
Fortunately hard drives are cheap these days.
SUUUCKKK!!!
I love this age of super-cheep Hard drives (I just bought a 120GB Western-digi for $60) but I fear it means there is NO Quality Control any more. Every manufacture is prone to many more failures than in the past few years…
Maybe I should set up a mirror-RAID….
I just bought a Maxtor firewire drive and make constant backups on that. Also, the new Sony DVD writers let you do packet writing as a way to do backups on the fly to DVD.
Obviously this doesn’t help you *now* but maybe in the future 🙂
Yeah, I back up everything on a firewire drive too. Saved my butt a couple of times already.
