Thursday Three

Screw the Friday Five, it’s the Thursday Three:
Answer the following:
1) What are the best three bands making music today?
2) What are the best three movie soundtracks ever?
3) What are the best three books that should be made into movies, but haven’t yet?
My answers:
1) Cake, Green Day, The Flaming Lips
2) Flash Gordon (by Queen), Apocalypse Now, Repo Man
3) John Carter, Warlord of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein

  1. Bands:
Sleater-Kinney… That’s about it. Today’s music is in rough shape.
    Soundtracks:
Desperado, Pulp Fiction, Conan the Barbarian.
    Books-to-film:
    Snow Crash: Neal Stephenson
To Your Scattered Bodies Go: Philip Jose Farmer
    Lord Valentine’s Castle: Robert Silverberg
(Snow Crash has the potential to be a huge hit…I don’t know why it’s taken so long to get any of Stephenson’s stuff on the big screen.)

  2. I just saw the 3XThursday this morning. I honestly hadn’t seen it before.
Last night over at Martin’s we discussed doing it. He did a google search and said “Dude, it’s been done.” It’s really a one time off only.

  3. Bands:
    Audioslave
    Pearl Jam
    System of the Down
    Those could change tomorrow.
    Soundtracks:
    The Empire Strikes Back
    E.T.
    The Fellowship of the Ring
    Books to film:
“I am Legend” by Richard Matheson
“Wizard and Glass” by Stephen King
“The Great and Secret Show” by Clive Barker

  4. Bands:
    The Corrs
    Barenaked Ladies
    ummm…
    Soundtracks:
The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams)
    Braveheart (James Horner)
Batman (Danny Elfman, not the crappy Prince one)
    Books:
    The Hot Zone (Richard Preston)
    Airframe (Michael Crichton)
Hell’s Angels: Into the Abyss (Yves Lavigne)

  5. Bands? [I’ll come back to that one]
Soundtracks? Magnolia, The Piano, Girl Interrupted, Braveheart, Jaws (wait… that’s 5… oh well, I’m a soundtrack geek)
Books to movies? The Iliad (finally happening), Ship of Gold, A Confederacy of Dunces

  6. 1)
FUGAZI- Probably one of the best bands ever… from DC. All shows about 8 bucks.
ColdPlay- Great albums, although the grammy performance sucked.
Shane MacGowen and the Popes- Great Band, however I think that you need Irish blook to like them, and it probably doesn’t hurt to be blinded by alcohol.
Beck- added as a fourth choice, because he really isn’t a band.
Ok, Ok I could probably name a few more.
    2)
Pulp Fiction & Reservoir Dogs- what can I say Quentin has good taste
French Kiss- Louis Armstrong, and more great music.
Singles- The Ultimate soundtrack… if you don’t own it, buy it.
    3)
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams- Actually was in the process of being scripted until Douglas passed. They may still attempt a release.
I can’t believe that most of the other books that I’ve read have already been movies(which sucked), and the ones that I haven’t aren’t movie worthy (i.e. The Alienist, Caleb Carr). In fact, I’d like to move that most books not be made into movies. I mean what’s the point since they generally try to remove half of the content. Although, I’ll probably still go and see them when they are released.
