Catching snippets of the GOP convention brings to mind a quote from Apocalypse now:
“Oh man, the shit piled up so fast in [the GOP] you needed wings to stay above it.”
Rationalizing hatred and greed has been translated into “family values” and “freedom”.
Thomas Jefferson is rolling in his grave.

I’m with you on the hatred. You loose me with the greed.
Greed is Good.
You also “loose” me with the english language.
😛
Now I am not a Republican by any means, but I did catch some of Arnold, and the Twins, and I have to say Arnold did great, while the twins went over the top and made a fool out of themselves and Grandma, the jokes were poorly done for national television … I thought… but that is all I can stomach… When does football start?
Wow! I quoted “Apocalypse Now” also when I wrote about the convention today. Great minds think alike. I also agree with what you wrote.
All conventions suck be they Dem or Rep. It’s just a matter of how bad the “suck-age” is. So far the Rep convention has sucked less.
I thought that Zell Miller was going to pull a gun last night and rush out to confront the protesters. Man, that guy is fired up!
I do admit I have a conservative bias, but can any of you left leaning posters out there really honestly tell me you are excited by a John Kerry presidency? Does he really inspire you? Get you “fired up”?
Well I agree, I am left leaner, and am nor “Fired up” at all about the thought we are geting either Kerry or Bush, neither will have better luck with terrorism, balance the budget, lower the deficet or fix social security, much less try some different approaches to fixing all the other thousands of problems we have. Both these guys are status quo, party followers and will implement the party agenda without any general thought as to wether the solutions will work or even fit the problem…. Yea I’m not even voting this year, popular votes don’t count and my state is voting republican, so my job is only to complain
Ben, before you or anyone else out there decide not to vote ask yourself the following, Do you want another Clarence Thomas or Scalia on the supreme court? Then look again at Bush and Kerry.
If you don’t vote you have no right to complain. Well, all right. You still may have the right (free speech and all) but I’m plugging my fingers in my ears and going “la la la” at you. 🙂
“Free Speech” doesn’t give you the right to complain. That’s a basic right of all human beings.
“Free Speech” as defined by the constitution ensures that you won’t be prosecuted by the government for the content of your speech.
But people sling that phrase – free speech – out all the time, and it irritates me. They complain that when they aren’t allowed to deviate from a dress code at school or wear pornographic t-shirts on airplanes that their “free speech is being violated”. That’s a load. Schools and businesses are allowed to set rules for their patrons.
Celebrities complain when people boycott them for stating a political viewpoint. They say their “free speech is being violated.” That’s BS too.
The constitutional right to free speech does not guarantee a lack of societal repercussions. The constitutional right to free speech does not guarantee that all organizations, clubs, businesses, or gatherings will allow you to say whatever you want without consequence.
The constitutional right to free speech DOES guarantee that the GOVERNMENT will not LOCK YOU UP you for saying it.
I know you know all of this Bribo. I know “free speech” has become a catch phrase like “Kleenex” and “Xerox”. But it’s still a peeve of mine.
Lighten up, Francis. Sheesh! 😉
ROFL…I mentally predicted that you’d say that before I hit send. You need to come up with another comeback. 🙂
How about this then: you can say what you want about politics, politicians and this great country of ours but unless you vote you won’t garner much respect from me.
Yea, I can understand that and respect that… but sadly it still is not a stronger feeling than my laziness, which pervents me from leaving the sofa that day to vote, or will. I know my laziness.
I was the same way about Bush/Gore, Ben. This election has energized me (and I think a lot of other folks feel the same way, regardless of what side of the political coin they’re on.)
