Cutting

Wandering the net I stumbled onto a story about raising the Tricolor from the English Channel on Critical Section The Tricolor was a huge car carrier ship that sunk last December loaded with expensive European cars.
The way they are solving it is pretty damn cool.
Be sure to check out the whole Critical Section site. It’s a pretty cool weblog.

  1. “Hazard to the environment”, huh? Leave it to the French. 😉
Here in New Jersey we just depth charge and wiredrag our wrecks, turning them into environmentally friendly reefs.
I’ve dove on oil tankers sunk during WWII. On some of them, there is still oil up in the corners of the holds.
I’d like a bit more detail on the rationale behind the salvage of the Tricolor.

  2. I think the problem was that the Tricolor sank in the main shipping lane. Other ships began bumping into the wreck and they had to clear it as a hazard.

  3. I suppose… many of the wrecks I dive on are at the depth the TriColor went down in (and also smack dab in the middle of shipping lanes.)
They’ve just been smashed/dragged flat. I’m just wondering if there is any other financial motive. Are they actually going to salvage the cargo?

  4. From what I read in the articles about this, the car makers are insisting on ‘every nut & bolt’ being retrieved.
Evidently they are scared of someone salvaging car parts and liability issues.
