Decoding the Evil League of Evil

I had heard much of a hullabaloo in Twitter about Joss Whedon's new show, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog during the week. Yesterday, I bought the show on iTunes and sat down to watch all three acts. Thanks to the Apple TV, I was able to watch on a nice television set, rather than in front of a computer.

The show was fantastic. I can only hope for a series. I suggest you buy it on iTunes immediately.

Spoiler Warning: If you are a complete spoiler queen and get all worked up about minor plot points that are obvious, then stop reading. Otherwise, I will continue to discuss part of the show that doesn't impact your enjoyment in any bit.

Of course, the most intriguing moment is the obvious teaser at the end, revealing of the Evil League of Evil about to begin a meeting.

Here is the clearest shot we have of the assembled Evil League of Evil.

From the end credits, we are given the roster:

Professor Normal
Fake Thomas Jefferson
Tie-Die
Dead Bowie
Fury Leika
Snake Bite
Bad Horse
Dr. Horrible

Now, I carefully grabbed screen shots of each character and made my best guess as to match the name with the face. The face of evil! Muah-ha-ha-ha!

First, with the most obvious matches...

Quite clearly, Bad Horse, leader of the Evil League of Evil. I don't put it past Joss Whedon to not have the actual horse be Bad Horse, but I think this is a safe assumption.

This is Dr. Horrible, now in his red costume and actually wearing his goggles.

Next, another safe assumption that this is Fake Thomas Jefferson. In other shots, he is shown holding a quill, further reinforcing the link to Fake Thomas Jefferson.

Slightly bit riskier is assuming that this is Dead Bowie. The general 70s look and makeup kinda gives this one away.

On the right side, in multi-colored garb, is who I believe to be Tie-Die. There are only a few frames of Tie-Die, but I believe the costume and the peace symbol necklace establish this conclusion firmly.

In this shot, I assume that on the left is Professor Normal. Mainly because he's the most professorial looking one at the table. To his right is Dead Bowie. Interestingly, the feet on the table are NOT those of Dead Bowie.

In this wide shot, we see entire Evil League of Evil. Between Professor Normal and Dead Bowie, owner of the feet on the table, shown above is Fury Leika. I believe it is Fury Leika due to the Viking-esque look, battle staff, and angry look.

This leaves only one person left, who we can assume to be Snake Bite. Not a lot to go on here. She doesn't really match up with any other name and she does look like she's more into nature by virture of holding a bouquet of flowers. Nothing snake or bite like in any shot to confirm this. Maybe she's got fangs we can't see.

One more wide shot of the group, with Tie-Die cut off on the right.

With this rationale, I give you my best guess as to who is who in the Evil League of Evil.

What do you think?

Update:

Based on comments by Jeff Donaldson and Eeyore, I think I may have reversed Fury Leika and Snake Bite.

The point being made is that the woman in white with a bouquet, could be a woman scorned at the altar. And we all know that "Hell hath no Fury like a woman scorned." I can see the idea of a 'Cobra Cowl' on the woman with a staff. So she could very well be Snake Bite.

I guess we won't know for sure, until Joss wants us to know for sure...

Nice work breaking out the characters.

I must say the episodes were very interesting even if the gods of prime time are not ready for a musical episodic.

Interesting that they intend to take the episodes down this evening (they are on HULU at the second).

Might have to buy them on iTunes just to hang on to it.

I think you have Snakebite and Fury Leika mixed up. The lady on the left between Dead Bowie and Professor Normal looks as if she has a "Cobra Cowl" on. I may be wrong.

I think the bride looking woman is Fury Leika. Remember, there's no fury like a woman scorned. The jilted bride is a classic woman scorned, just read "Great Expectations"!

I also think that Snakebite and Fury Leika are mixed up. A Leika seems to be a doll or plaything in Old Icelandic ( http://www.northvegr.org/zoega/h266.php ) and the female on the right is much more "doll like"

The staff on Snake Bite also looks like it has a snake coiled around it.

... Plus, she's Liz Vassey.

... and this is Athena Demos.

Yeah, I think the lady with the bouquet is Fury Leika. Not fury like anger even, but Fury as in... "the" furies from Greek Mythology.
From wiki:
"female, chthonic deities of vengeance or supernatural personifications of the anger of the dead"
She looks dead, yes? And her dress isn't a wedding dress, but a Grecian one.

An alternative way to solve this conundrum is to simply compare pictures of the actresses with the screenshots above. There might be better pictures lying on the Internet, but here are headshots of

Athena Demos (Snake Bite)
http://www.athenademos.tv/headshots.html

and Liz Vassey (Fury Leika)
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2987036928/nm0890808

Based on this, I'd day the "Alternative" Line-Up is the correct one. The other one just doesn't fit with the faces.

I watched Ep.1 and Ep.2. Need to buy Ep.3. What a great show.

Best line so far?

At first I wondered what super-powers these villains might possess.

Then I realized that it may be the wrong question to ask. The real question is, what musical styles do they bring to the table? That question is so much easier to answer. Just look around the table... wow. If there's a sequel, it's gonna rock!

BTW, do we have any hints on the lesser evils? I believe that Moist mentions Bait-n-Switch and Conflict Diamond? There's also the guy with the pink boxing gloves in the last act.

Moist is by far, my favorite minor character.

I also want to know more about "Johnny Snow", who I imagine is the B grade analog to Captain Hammer.

Posted by: JB [] on July 21, 2008 9:24 AM

Moist also mentions Hourglass (who saw a kid in Iowa who's gonna be president someday).

The guy in the pink boxing gloves, I assume, is the Pink Pummeler mentioned in the credits.

Posted by: awh [] on July 21, 2008 9:33 AM

@"JB": Johnny Snow is more likely a superindie rather than a superhero, since the latter customarily do not wield death rays.

Posted by: daw [] on July 21, 2008 2:29 PM

@ JB: I think Bait and Switch are the two girls that Moist went on a double date with - he though he would be with Bait, but it turned out he was with Switch.

P.S.: and Capt. got Hammered when he defied this protocol.

Posted by: daw [] on July 21, 2008 2:42 PM

"Purple Pimp" (@ the reception) looks vaguely cabbalistic, although that would not seem to fit.

Well done. Whedon strikes again, while showing no mercy to popular characters. In Serenity it was the jovial Wash that bit the dust. Who saw the plot twist that cemented Dr. Horrible's entry into the ELoE? Even Bad Horse was duly impressed, which is no easy feat.

A murder would be nice indeed.

Did not enjoy Ep.3 as much as 1 & 2. I think Dr. Horrible is at his best when he is blogging and in his secret identity.

Still, this is good stuff and I'm anxious to see where Whedon goes with this.

A thought re: Snake Bite....

Snakebite is a gothy drink that goths drink. IT involves cider, lager, and blackberry syrup. The femme fatale chosen as "Snake Bite" looks like she might have had a few of them in her time. Gothy things like Goths, in other words.

>Slightly bit riskier is assuming that this is Dead Bowie

He's dressed as Ziggy Stardust! Where on earth is the risk in assuming?!

Posted by: anon [] on July 25, 2008 2:24 AM

Based on the IMDB listings for Snake Bite and Fury Leika, I'd say that your second assumption is correct.

Also, Fury Leika is played by the same woman who played Captain Liberty in the Live-Action "The Tick" series.

:D

I think you people are reading into things too much re: Fury Leika, I mean the phrase *is* "hell hath no FURY LIKE A woman scorned"

Snakebite.

She's on the left. I know Athena, and that's here on the left. Consider this concrete confirmation. :)

Know my name my name - Miss Fortune - and that is all you need remember.

I'm dead sure that Snakebite is the one on the left side due to this image on Athena Demos' site.

It also gives a good look at Snakebite's costume.

Mistress Paragon, why hasn't Dr. Horrible deigned to sign your webpage?

Posted by: newkidonthebloc [] on August 24, 2008 1:56 PM

Something I've been thinking about - are the lesser villains (Moist, PP1, PP2, Hourglass, B&S etc) perhaps the henchmen for the Evil Leaguers? That would explain them hanging out at the party while the ELE meets in the conference room. Moist certainly becomes Dr. H's henchman after the shelter dedication.

If true, it would be fun to think who matches up with whom. Bad Horse has his Cowboy Chorus, but who henches for Fake Thomas Jefferson? Professor Normal? Tie-Die?

Posted by: Laundromat [] on August 25, 2008 10:31 AM

Yeah, I agree with the second line-up, I think.

But I have a huge problem. You spelled Joss's name wrong in the first sentence. That is a huge, huge mistake. Not cool.
